"Couture is fashion that is constructed by hand from start to finish, made from high quality, expensive, often unusual fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail and finished by the most experienced and capable seamstresses, often using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques. Couture translates literally from French as "dressmaking", but may also refer to fashion, sewing, or needlework.
Considering the amount of time, money, and skill that is allotted to each completed piece, haute couture garments are also described as having no price tag - in other words, budget is not relevant. Each couture piece is not made to sell. Rather, they were designed and constructed for the runway, much like an art exhibition."
Every alpaca's breeding selection is focused on attaining the best possible fleece, not just for the show circuit but to create the most exquisite luxury garment. Fineness, handle, brightness and luster are the best attributes. Lower micron fleeces are usually found in lighter colored alpacas, our 14 years of diligence has demonstrated that it is possible to achieve such remarkable results of Royal Baby Fine Alpaca in the richest of colors.
Annually we shear our alpacas. Then I skirt the fleeces, which is the removal of any unwanted debris aka "vegetable matter" within the fleece. Utilizing my own design of a skirting table it takes roughly two hours to remove most of the dirt particles and dust. I then sort out the colors within the blanket.
The fleece is then gently pulled apart into small handfuls and hand washed in room temperature water with a bit of baby shampoo, rinsed several times and then placed on racks to air dry.
From there I hand comb the fiber, which is a method of stretching each lock and aligning them, along, with a bit more removal of that one or two pieces of grass using my trusty tweezer. Upon pulling the fibers through a gadget called a diz the fleece now becomes alpaca roving.
From here it is where the creativity comes to play and the tiniest wisps of fibers are laid out to either be wet felted, nuno felted or hand needle felted creating the most luxurious accessory you can have against the skin.
